Joshua
Joshua is a figure in the Torah, being one of the spies for Israel (Numbers 13) and identified in other passages of the Bible as Moses' assistant. He is the central character in the Book of Joshua and is best known for leading the Israelite tribes in the conquest of Canaan after the death of Moses. His name was Hoshea (הוֹשֵׁעַ) the son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim, but Moses called him Joshua (Numbers 13:16), the name by which he is commonly known. According to the Bible he was born in Egypt prior to the Exodus.
Role in the Bible[edit | edit source]
According to the books of Exodus, Numbers and Joshua, he became the leader of the Israelite tribes after the death of Moses; his name was Hoshea the son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim, but Moses called him Joshua, the name by which he is commonly known; and he was born in Egypt prior to the Exodus, and was probably the same age as Caleb, with whom he is occasionally associated.
He was one of the twelve spies of Israel sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan. (Numbers 13:1–16) After the death of Moses, he led the Israelite tribes in the conquest of Canaan, and allocated the land to the tribes. According to Biblical chronology, Joshua lived between 1355 and 1245 BCE, or sometime in the late Bronze Age. According to Joshua 24:29, Joshua died at the age of 110.
Joshua in the Bible[edit | edit source]
Joshua's acts and the battles he led are narrated in the Book of Joshua. His deeds and leadership qualities made him a key figure in the establishment of the Jewish people in the land of Israel. Among the key events during his leadership were the fall of the city of Jericho, the sun standing still during the battle of Gibeon, and the division of the land among the twelve tribes.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Joshua's legacy is important in Judaism because he is viewed as the model for future Jewish leaders. His faithfulness to God, courage in the face of adversity, and strong leadership skills are qualities that Jewish tradition holds up as worthy of emulation.
