Julia Holmes Smith was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1839. She pursued her education in medicine at a time when it was uncommon for women to enter the field. She graduated from the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1877.

After completing her medical education, Smith moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she established a successful practice in homeopathy.
