Katherine O'Brien is a renowned epidemiologist and public health expert, known for her significant contributions to the field of vaccine research and policy. She is currently serving as the Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Katherine O'Brien completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, where she majored in Biology. She then pursued her medical degree from McGill University, followed by a Master's degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She also holds a doctorate in Epidemiology from the same institution.

O'Brien started her career as a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has also served as the Executive Director of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at Johns Hopkins. Her work primarily focuses on the use of vaccines in low-income countries, with a particular emphasis on pneumococcal disease.

In her current role at the WHO, O'Brien is responsible for the organization's global work on immunization and vaccines. She leads efforts to advance the research, development, and delivery of vaccines, as well as the implementation of immunization programs worldwide.

O'Brien's research has significantly contributed to the understanding of the epidemiology and prevention of pneumococcal disease.
