Kendal is a market town and civil parish within the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, England. Historically part of Westmorland, Kendal is known for its production of Kendal Mint Cake, a glucose-based confectionery reputed for its energy-giving properties, and its association with the outdoor activities, particularly hiking and mountaineering. The town's name comes from the Old Norse kirkja dalr, which means "valley of the church".

History

Kendal's history is evident in its narrow yards and lanes, remnants of its medieval layout. The town was granted a market charter in 1189, which established it as a center of trade in the region. Kendal Castle, now in ruins, dates from the late 12th century and was once the home of the Lancaster family, including Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII.
