Kennedy is a surname of Irish origin that has also been used as a given name. The surname is an Anglicized version of the Irish "Ó Ceanéidigh," meaning "descendant of Ceanéidigh." The name Ceanéidigh itself is a compound of the words "ceann," meaning head, and "éidigh," meaning ugly or wounded.

Origins[edit | edit source]

The Kennedy surname originated in Ireland, where it was used by a number of different clans and families. The most notable of these was the O'Kennedy clan, which was a powerful family in the region of Ormond, now County Tipperary. The O'Kennedys were part of the Dál gCais tribal grouping, which also included the O'Briens and the MacNamaras, among others.

The Kennedy name has been borne by many notable individuals and families, particularly in the United States. The most famous of these is the Kennedy family, a prominent political family that has produced a number of high-profile politicians, including President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. While Kennedy is most commonly used as a surname, it has also been used as a given name. It is unisex, and can be used for both boys and girls. Notable people with the given name Kennedy include Kennedy Kennedy McKinney, a former professional boxer, and Kennedy Montgomery, a television commentator.
