Kenneth M. Curtis (born February 8, 1931) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 68th Governor of Maine from 1967 to 1975. A member of the Democratic Party, Curtis is noted for his contributions to education reform and environmental protection during his tenure as governor.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Kenneth Curtis was born in Leeds, Maine. He attended the Maine Maritime Academy, graduating with a degree in nautical science. Curtis furthered his education at the University of Maine, where he earned a bachelor's degree, and later at Harvard University, where he obtained his law degree.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Curtis began his political career in the Maine State Senate, where he served before running for governor. In 1966, he was elected Governor of Maine, and he was re-elected in 1970. During his governorship, Curtis was instrumental in implementing significant educational reforms, including the establishment of the Maine Community College System. He also focused on environmental issues, advocating for legislation that protected Maine's natural resources.
Post-Gubernatorial Career[edit | edit source]
After his tenure as governor, Curtis continued to be involved in politics and public service. He served as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee and was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Canada.
