Koodathayi Cyanide Killings refers to a series of murders that took place in the Koodathayi village of Kozhikode district, Kerala, India. Between 2002 and 2019, six members of the same family were killed using cyanide poison. The case garnered significant media attention and raised concerns about the use of poison for committing murders in India.

Background[edit | edit source]

The Koodathayi Cyanide Killings came to light in October 2019, when the Kerala Police arrested Jolly Joseph, a 47-year-old woman, for her involvement in the deaths of six members of her family over a span of 17 years. The victims included her husband Roy Thomas, his parents Tom Thomas and Annamma Thomas, their relative Mathew Manjadiyil, and two other family members, Alphine and Sily.

Investigation[edit | edit source]

The investigation began after Roy Thomas died in 2011, and an autopsy revealed cyanide in his body. Initially, his death was ruled as a suicide, but suspicions arose when family members demanded a thorough investigation, leading to the exhumation of bodies of the other family members who had died under mysterious circumstances.

The police discovered that Jolly Joseph had been present at every incident and had given the victims food or drink laced with cyanide. Further investigation revealed that she had obtained cyanide from a local goldsmith, who believed she was using it to kill rats.

Motive[edit | edit source]

The motives behind the murders were complex and included financial gain, property disputes, and personal vendettas. Jolly Joseph was found to have forged documents and manipulated situations to gain control over the family's assets and properties.

Trial[edit | edit source]

The trial of Jolly Joseph and two accomplices, who allegedly provided her with cyanide, began in 2020. The case is being tried in a special court in Kozhikode, Kerala, under tight security due to the high-profile nature of the crimes.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The Koodathayi Cyanide Killings have had a profound impact on the local community and have raised questions about the ease of access to poisons like cyanide. The case has also led to discussions about the need for more stringent regulations and checks on the sale of hazardous substances.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

The case has inspired several documentaries, crime shows, and a feature film, highlighting the fascination and horror it has generated among the public.
