Kumamoto is a city located in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, in Japan. It is the capital city of the prefecture and is known for its iconic Kumamoto Castle, one of the most impressive castles in Japan.

Kumamoto was founded in 1588 by Kato Kiyomasa, a feudal lord of the Edo period. The city was developed around Kumamoto Castle, which was built by Kiyomasa and is considered one of the three premier castles in Japan.
