Kurtis Blow is an influential figure in the hip hop music and culture. Born Kurtis Walker on August 9, 1959, in Harlem, New York, he is recognized as one of the first commercially successful rappers and is known for his contribution to the growth of hip hop during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Kurtis Blow's career took off in the late 1970s when he became the first rapper to sign with a major record label, Mercury Records. His debut single, "Christmas Rappin'," was released in 1979 and sold over 500,000 copies. This success was followed by his self-titled album Kurtis Blow, released in 1980, which featured the hit single "The Breaks." "The Breaks" became the first certified gold record rap song for its sales of over half a million copies.

Throughout the 1980s, Kurtis Blow released several albums that contributed to the mainstream acceptance of hip hop. His notable tracks include "Basketball," "If I Ruled the World," and "Party Time." Beyond his solo career, Blow has been influential as a producer, working with artists such as The Fat Boys, Run-D.M.C., and Wyclef Jean.
