Léopoldville, now known as Kinshasa, is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located on the southern bank of the Congo River, directly across from Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo.
History[edit | edit source]
Léopoldville was founded in 1881 by the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, who named it after King Leopold II of Belgium. The city was initially a trading post and a base for the Congo Free State, a private enterprise controlled by King Leopold II. The area was chosen for its strategic location on the Congo River, which was a major transportation route into the interior of Africa.
In 1923, Léopoldville became the capital of the Belgian Congo, replacing Boma. The city grew rapidly as a center of administration and commerce. During the colonial period, Léopoldville was a segregated city, with distinct areas for Europeans and Africans.
After the Congo Crisis and the country's independence in 1960, Léopoldville was renamed Kinshasa in 1966, in honor of a village that once stood near the site of the city. The name change was part of a broader movement to replace colonial names with indigenous ones.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Léopoldville is situated on a flat plain along the Congo River, which is the second longest river in Africa. The city covers an area of approximately 9,965 square kilometers. The climate is tropical, with a wet season from October to May and a dry season from June to September.

Léopoldville has experienced rapid population growth, with an estimated population of over 15 million people as of 2021. The city is a melting pot of ethnic groups, languages, and cultures, reflecting the diversity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
