Lütfi Kırdar
Turkish physician and politician
Lütfi Kırdar (1887 – 17 February 1961) was a prominent Turkish physician and politician who played a significant role in the development of modern Turkey. He served as the Governor and Mayor of Istanbul and later as the Minister of Health and Social Security. His contributions to the urban development of Istanbul and his efforts in the field of public health are well-remembered.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Lütfi Kırdar was born in 1887 in Kirkuk, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He completed his primary and secondary education in Kirkuk before moving to Istanbul to pursue higher education. Kırdar graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1913, where he developed a keen interest in public health and administration.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his medical education, Kırdar served as a physician in various parts of the Ottoman Empire. During World War I, he worked as a military doctor, gaining valuable experience in medical administration and public health.

Governor and Mayor of Istanbul[edit | edit source]
In 1938, Lütfi Kırdar was appointed as the Governor and Mayor of Istanbul, a position he held until 1949. During his tenure, he initiated numerous urban development projects that transformed the city. He was instrumental in the construction of new roads, bridges, and public buildings, which facilitated the modernization of Istanbul.
One of his notable projects was the development of the Atatürk Cultural Center, a major cultural venue in Istanbul. The groundbreaking ceremony of this center was a significant event, marking the city's commitment to cultural advancement.
Minister of Health and Social Security[edit | edit source]
In 1949, Kırdar was appointed as the Minister of Health and Social Security. In this role, he focused on improving the healthcare infrastructure of Turkey. He advocated for the establishment of new hospitals and clinics, and he worked to improve the training and distribution of healthcare professionals across the country.

Lütfi Kırdar's contributions to both the urban development of Istanbul and the healthcare system of Turkey have left a lasting impact. The Lütfi Kırdar Convention and Exhibition Center in Istanbul is named in his honor, serving as a testament to his influence on the city.
