La Mesa

La Mesa is a city located in San Diego County, California, in the United States. The city, whose name means "the table" in Spanish, is known for its warm climate, parks, and community events.

La Mesa was founded in 1869 and incorporated as a city on February 16, 1912. Its history is marked by the influence of the Kumeyaay people, the original inhabitants of the region, and the Spanish missionaries who arrived in the 18th century.

Geography[edit | edit source]

La Mesa is located at 32°46′17″N 117°1′22″W. The city covers an area of 9.1 square miles, of which 9.1 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles is water. It is bordered by the cities of San Diego and El Cajon.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, La Mesa had a population of 57,065. The racial makeup of the city was 69.5% White, 8.0% African American, 0.8% Native American, 5.5% Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, 10.7% from other races, and 5.1% from two or more races.

Economy[edit | edit source]

La Mesa's economy is primarily based on retail trade, healthcare, and social assistance. The city is home to the Grossmont Center, a large shopping mall, and the Sharp Grossmont Hospital, the largest healthcare facility in East County San Diego.

Education[edit | edit source]

La Mesa is served by the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, which operates 17 elementary schools and 4 middle schools. The city is also home to Helix High School, a charter high school that is part of the Grossmont Union High School District.

Culture[edit | edit source]

La Mesa hosts several annual events, including the La Mesa Oktoberfest, the Back to the 50s Car Show, and the Christmas in the Village festival. The city also has a number of parks, including La Mesa Park, Briercrest Park, and MacArthur Park.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

La Mesa is served by the San Diego Trolley's Orange Line and Green Line, which provide access to downtown San Diego and other parts of the county. The city is also served by several bus routes operated by the Metropolitan Transit System.

Notable people[edit | edit source]

Notable people from La Mesa include actor Dennis Hopper, musician Dave Mustaine, and baseball player Aaron Boone.
