La Peregrina Pearl is one of the most famous and historic pearls in the world. Its name translates from Spanish as "The Pilgrim" or "The Wanderer." The pearl is renowned not only for its large size and perfect pear shape but also for its remarkable history that spans over 500 years, involving royalty, pirates, and celebrities.

History[edit | edit source]

La Peregrina was discovered in the Gulf of Panama in the 16th century. The pearl weighed approximately 55.95 carats (11.2 grams) and was immediately celebrated for its size and beauty. It first came into the possession of the Spanish royal family in the 1500s when King Philip II of Spain gifted it to his wife, Queen Mary I of England. The pearl was a cherished piece in the Spanish crown jewels for centuries.

Over the years, La Peregrina changed hands among European royalty and was owned by several Spanish kings. In the 19th century, the pearl came into the possession of Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. After changing several owners, it was bought by the British Marquess of Abercorn.

The most recent chapter in the history of La Peregrina began in 1969 when actor Richard Burton purchased the pearl at auction for $37,000 as a Valentine's Day gift for his wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor, known for her love of exquisite jewelry, was enchanted by La Peregrina and had it set into a magnificent necklace designed by Cartier. The necklace featured the pearl as its centerpiece, surrounded by a series of diamonds and rubies.

Physical Characteristics[edit | edit source]

La Peregrina is one of the largest and most symmetrically perfect pear-shaped pearls ever found. Its weight, size, and shape, combined with its lustrous white color, make it a unique gemstone. After being set in the Cartier necklace, its beauty was further enhanced, making it a piece of jewelry of unparalleled elegance.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The pearl has not only been a symbol of wealth and status but also of beauty and mystery throughout its history. It has inspired artists, poets, and jewelers, and its story has been intertwined with that of the powerful and famous figures who have owned it. La Peregrina remains a testament to the enduring allure of pearls as objects of desire.

Current Status[edit | edit source]

After Elizabeth Taylor's death in 2011, La Peregrina was sold at auction by Christie's for a record price of $11 million, far exceeding its estimated value. The sale highlighted the pearl's enduring appeal and historical significance. The current owner of La Peregrina remains anonymous, but the pearl continues to be a symbol of luxury and timeless beauty.
