La niña

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

La Niña is a climate pattern characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific, compared to El Niño, which is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. The La Niña phenomenon is one of the three phases of the phenomenon known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

Overview[edit | edit source]

The term La Niña originates from Spanish, meaning 'The Girl', and is used to describe the cooler phase of the ENSO cycle. This phase involves a band of anomalously cold ocean temperatures that occur in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. These changes in ocean temperatures can have significant impacts on weather patterns around the world.

Effects[edit | edit source]

The effects of La Niña are generally opposite to those of El Niño. For example, during a La Niña year, winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the Southeast United States and cooler than normal in the Northwest. La Niña can also contribute to an increase in Atlantic hurricane activity due to reductions in vertical wind shear.

Prediction and Monitoring[edit | edit source]

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other scientific organizations monitor sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean as a predictor for La Niña conditions. The presence of La Niña can significantly influence weather patterns and climate conditions, making its prediction an important aspect of weather forecasting.
