Ladle

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ladle is a type of spoon used for soup, stew, or other foods. Although designs vary, a typical ladle has a long handle terminating in a deep bowl, frequently with the bowl oriented at an angle to the handle to facilitate lifting liquid out of a pot or other vessel and conveying it to a bowl. Some ladles involve a point on the side of the basin to allow for finer stream when pouring the liquid; however, this can create difficulty for left handed users, as it is easier to pour towards oneself. Such ladles are also used for serving (portioning out) both liquid and solid foods.

History[edit | edit source]

The word ladle derives from Old English hladan (to load) and related to the Old High German laffen, or ladle. Ladles have been found in very early archaeological contexts, suggesting that prehistoric peoples found them useful tools for food preparation.

Types[edit | edit source]

There are many types of ladles, including gravy ladles, soup ladles and punch ladles. They can be made from a variety of materials including stainless steel, aluminium, silver, plastic, wood and ceramic.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Ladles are used for a variety of kitchen tasks, including serving soups and stews, portioning out foods, and measuring liquids. They are also used in food preparation, such as in the process of making sauces or gravies.
