Lady of Guardamar
Lady of Guardamar, also known as the Dama de Guardamar, is a significant Iberian sculpture dating from the 4th century BC. This artifact is one of the most important pieces of Iberian art and provides valuable insights into the culture, religion, and society of the Iberian Peninsula before the Roman conquest. The sculpture was discovered in the town of Guardamar del Segura, in the province of Alicante, Spain, hence its name.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Lady of Guardamar is a limestone bust that stands approximately 50 cm tall. It depicts a female figure, possibly a goddess or a high-ranking woman, characterized by its intricate detail and stylized features. The figure wears a complex headdress and ornaments, indicative of high social status or divinity in Iberian society. The craftsmanship suggests a high level of skill and artistry among the Iberians.
Discovery[edit | edit source]
The sculpture was unearthed in 1987 during archaeological excavations at the Phoenician archaeological site of Cabezo Lucero, near Guardamar del Segura. Its discovery was significant as it provided further evidence of Phoenician influence in the region and the interconnectedness of Mediterranean cultures during the first millennium BC.
Significance[edit | edit source]
The Lady of Guardamar is an essential artifact for understanding the Iberian culture. It is one of the few remaining examples of Iberian sculpture that has survived in good condition. The sculpture's style and iconography have been crucial in studying the religious beliefs, social structure, and artistic achievements of the Iberian people. It also highlights the influence of other Mediterranean cultures, such as the Greeks and Phoenicians, on the Iberian Peninsula.
Current Location[edit | edit source]
After its discovery, the Lady of Guardamar was moved to the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ), where it is currently on display. The museum offers visitors a chance to view this masterpiece of Iberian art and learn about the history and culture of the region.
