Lanvin is a high-end French fashion house founded by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889. It is one of the oldest fashion houses in France that is still in operation. Lanvin initially started as a millinery shop in Paris, before expanding into clothing for mothers and daughters, which led to the establishment of the brand as a symbol of French elegance and sophistication. Over the years, Lanvin has expanded its offerings to include men's fashion, home decor, and perfumes, becoming a comprehensive luxury lifestyle brand.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Lanvin began when Jeanne Lanvin, born in 1867, opened her first millinery shop in Paris in 1889. Her designs quickly gained popularity among the Parisian elite, prompting her to expand her business into clothing. Lanvin's skill in fashion design was largely self-taught, drawing inspiration from her travels, art, and a deep passion for different cultures.

In 1909, Lanvin joined the Syndicat de la Couture, which marked her formal status as a couturière. The same year, she introduced her daughter Marguerite's clothing line, which was met with widespread acclaim. This success led to the expansion of her brand to include women's fashion, which was characterized by intricate embroidery, sumptuous fabrics, and vibrant colors.

During the 1920s, Lanvin's brand became synonymous with luxury and was known for its exotic and innovative designs. Jeanne Lanvin was also a pioneer in the perfume industry, launching her first fragrance, My Sin, in 1924, followed by the iconic Arpège in 1927, inspired by the sound of her daughter practicing her scales on the piano.

After Jeanne Lanvin's death in 1946, the house went through several creative directors, each bringing their unique vision while maintaining the brand's heritage. Lanvin has been under the artistic direction of several notable designers, including Alber Elbaz from 2001 until 2015, whose tenure was marked by a rejuvenation of the brand, introducing modernity while respecting its traditional roots.

Lanvin is known for its modern and innovative designs while maintaining a connection to its rich history.
