Larry Hogan (Lawrence Joseph Hogan Jr.) is an American politician and businessman who served as the 62nd Governor of Maryland from January 21, 2015, to January 18, 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Hogan was the second Republican governor of Maryland in nearly 50 years and the first to be re-elected in the state's history.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Larry Hogan was born on May 25, 1956, in Washington, D.C., to Nora (née Maguire) and Lawrence Hogan Sr., who served as a U.S. Congressman and Prince George's County Executive. Hogan grew up in Landover, Maryland, and attended Saint Ambrose Catholic School and DeMatha Catholic High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and political science from Florida State University in 1978.

Business Career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics, Hogan established himself in the business world. In 1985, he founded Hogan Companies, which is involved in real estate brokerage, investment, and development. The company has been successful in land development and property management throughout the Maryland area.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Hogan's political career began in earnest when he served as Secretary of Appointments under Governor Bob Ehrlich from 2003 to 2007, where he was responsible for the appointments of thousands of state positions. In 2011, Hogan founded Change Maryland, a nonpartisan grassroots organization, which he used as a platform to criticize the tax policies of then-Governor Martin O'Malley and to advocate for fiscal responsibility.

Governor of Maryland[edit | edit source]

Hogan announced his candidacy for Governor of Maryland in 2014. Running on a platform of fiscal restraint, tax cuts, and economic growth, Hogan defeated Democratic nominee Anthony Brown in a surprising upset. As governor, Hogan focused on economic issues, environmental conservation, and infrastructure improvement. He gained national attention for his response to the 2015 Baltimore protests, where he declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to restore order.

Throughout his tenure, Hogan was known for his moderate political stance, often working across the aisle to achieve legislative goals. He was re-elected in 2018, defeating Democratic challenger Ben Jealous.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Hogan has been open about his personal challenges, including his battle with stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which he publicly disclosed in June 2015. He underwent chemotherapy treatment and announced he was in remission in November 2015.

Hogan is married to Yumi Hogan, an artist and teacher, making her the first Korean-American First Lady of Maryland. They have three daughters.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Hogan's tenure as governor is marked by his pragmatic approach to governance, focusing on economic recovery, environmental issues, and bipartisanship. His leadership during crises, particularly the Baltimore protests and his health challenges, has been praised. Hogan has been mentioned as a potential candidate for higher office, reflecting his popularity and moderate stance within the Republican Party.
