Last Mile

The Last Mile is a term used in supply chain management and broadband networks to describe the final leg of the networks, delivering the service to the end-user, or the customer. In the context of transportation, it refers to the movement of goods from a transportation hub to the final delivery destination. In telecommunications, it refers to the final leg of the telecommunications networks that deliver services to customers.

Supply Chain Management[edit | edit source]

In supply chain management, the last mile describes the efficient movement of goods from a transportation hub to the final delivery destination. This is often the most challenging and expensive part of the supply chain due to factors such as traffic congestion, lack of parking, and restrictions on vehicle sizes. The last mile problem can also refer to the challenge of delivering a service or product to end users who are not connected to a network, such as in rural or remote areas.

Telecommunications[edit | edit source]

In telecommunications, the last mile refers to the final leg of the telecommunications networks that deliver services to end users or customers. This can be a physical line, such as a copper wire or fiber optic cable, or a wireless connection. The last mile is often seen as a bottleneck in telecommunications networks, as it is typically the slowest and most expensive part of the network to upgrade.

Solutions[edit | edit source]

Various solutions have been proposed to address the last mile problem in both supply chain management and telecommunications. These include the use of drone delivery, autonomous vehicles, and micro-fulfillment centers in supply chain management, and the deployment of 5G networks, satellite internet, and fixed wireless in telecommunications.
