Lateral cervical lymph nodes
Lateral cervical lymph nodes are a group of lymph nodes located in the lateral aspect of the neck. They are part of the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in the body's immune response. The lateral cervical lymph nodes are divided into superior and inferior groups, each with its unique anatomical and clinical significance.
Anatomy[edit]
The superior lateral cervical lymph nodes are located along the upper third of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, extending from the skull base to the level of the thyroid cartilage. They receive lymphatic drainage from the posterior part of the scalp and the neck.
The inferior lateral cervical lymph nodes or jugulodigastric lymph nodes are located along the lower two-thirds of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, extending from the level of the thyroid cartilage to the clavicle. They receive lymphatic drainage from the anterior part of the scalp, the face, the neck, the nasopharynx, and the oropharynx.
Clinical Significance[edit]
Enlargement of the lateral cervical lymph nodes, known as lymphadenopathy, can be a sign of various diseases, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers such as lymphoma and metastatic cancer. The location and extent of lymphadenopathy in the lateral cervical region can provide valuable clues to the underlying disease process.
In the context of head and neck cancer, the status of the lateral cervical lymph nodes is a critical factor in staging the disease and planning treatment. The presence of metastatic cancer in these nodes often indicates a more advanced disease and a poorer prognosis.
