Laura is a given name in various languages. Among its notable bearers are Laura Ingalls Wilder, an American author who wrote the Little House series of children's novels based on her childhood in a pioneer family, and Laura Secord, a Canadian heroine of the War of 1812.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name Laura is the feminized form of laurus, Latin for "bay laurel plant", which in the Greco-Roman era was used as a symbol of victory, honor or fame. The name represents the embodiment of victory and strength. The plant was sacred to the god Apollo, whose temple in Delphi was surrounded by a laurel forest, and its leaves were used to make wreaths to crown victors in the Pythian games.
