LeCompte

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

LeCompte is a medical procedure named after the American obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Arthur LeCompte. It is a surgical technique used in the treatment of congenital heart disease, specifically transposition of the great arteries (TGA).

Overview[edit | edit source]

The LeCompte maneuver involves the anterior translocation of the pulmonary artery in front of the aorta. This is done to correct the anatomical positioning of the great arteries in patients with TGA. The procedure is often performed in conjunction with the Arterial switch operation (ASO), which is the primary surgical treatment for TGA.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

During the LeCompte maneuver, the pulmonary artery is dissected free from the aorta and moved anteriorly. This allows the aorta to be positioned behind the pulmonary artery, correcting the transposition. The coronary arteries are also reimplanted into the new aorta. The procedure is complex and requires a high level of surgical skill.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

Like all surgical procedures, the LeCompte maneuver carries certain risks. These include bleeding, infection, and complications related to anesthesia. There may also be risks associated with the reimplantation of the coronary arteries. Long-term complications can include pulmonary artery distortion and compression of the airway.

History[edit | edit source]

The LeCompte maneuver was first described by Dr. Arthur LeCompte in the 1980s. It has since become a standard part of the surgical treatment for TGA.
