LeRoy Carhart
LeRoy Carhart is an American physician and retired United States Air Force colonel. He is one of the few doctors in the United States who publicly acknowledges that he performs late-term abortions.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Carhart was born in Phoenix, Arizona on September 24, 1941. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University in 1966 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1973.
Career[edit | edit source]
Carhart served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1985, retiring as a colonel. He began performing abortions in 1985 and has been involved in several legal cases related to abortion rights, including Stenberg v. Carhart and Gonzales v. Carhart.
Legal cases[edit | edit source]
In Stenberg v. Carhart, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down a Nebraska law banning partial-birth abortions. In Gonzales v. Carhart, the Supreme Court upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Carhart is married to Mary Lou Carhart. They have four children and live in Bellevue, Nebraska.
