Left-wing terrorism
Left-wing terrorism refers to acts of terrorism that are carried out with the aim of overthrowing capitalist systems and replacing them with socialist or communist societies. This form of terrorism is typically motivated by ideologies that are rooted in Marxism, Leninism, Maoism, or other leftist political theories.
History[edit | edit source]
Left-wing terrorism has its roots in the early 20th century, with the rise of revolutionary movements inspired by the Russian Revolution of 1917. Throughout the 20th century, various left-wing terrorist groups emerged, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s, a period marked by widespread social and political upheaval.
Notable Groups[edit | edit source]
Several prominent left-wing terrorist organizations have been active over the years:
- The Red Army Faction (RAF), also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group, was a West German far-left militant organization.
- The Weather Underground was an American radical left-wing organization.
- The Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) is a Maoist guerrilla group in Peru.
- The Red Brigades (Brigate Rosse) were an Italian Marxist-Leninist terrorist group.
Ideology[edit | edit source]

These ideologies advocate for the dismantling of capitalist structures and the establishment of a classless society. Left-wing terrorists often target symbols of the state, financial institutions, and multinational corporations, which they view as embodiments of capitalist oppression.
Tactics[edit | edit source]

- Bombings
- Assassinations
- Kidnappings
- Armed robberies
These acts are intended to destabilize the existing political order and draw attention to their causes.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The impact of left-wing terrorism has varied by region and historical context. In other instances, such as in the United States, the influence of left-wing terrorist groups has been more limited.

Governments have employed various strategies to combat left-wing terrorism, including:
- Enhanced law enforcement measures
