Leiden
Leiden is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. Known for its historic city center and as a key player in the Dutch Golden Age, Leiden is also renowned for its prestigious Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands.

Leiden's history dates back to Roman times, when it was a frontier town on the northern border of the Roman Empire. The city gained prominence in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, when it became a major center for science, art, and philosophy.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Leiden is located on the Old Rhine, in the province of South Holland. The city is part of the Randstad, the economic and population center of the Netherlands.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Leiden's economy is diverse, with a strong focus on knowledge-intensive industries. The city is home to the Leiden Bio Science Park, one of the largest life sciences clusters in Europe.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Leiden is known for its rich cultural scene, with numerous museums, including the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center. The city also hosts several annual events, such as the Leiden International Film Festival and the 3 October Festival, which celebrates the end of the Siege of Leiden in 1574.

Leiden is home to Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands, and the Leiden University Medical Center. The city also has several other higher education institutions, including the Webster University Leiden and the Leiden University of Applied Sciences.

Leiden is well connected by road and rail, with the Leiden Central Station serving as a major hub for train services in the Netherlands. The city also has a network of canals, which are used for both transport and recreation.
