Leipzig is the most populous city in the German state of Saxony. It is located in the northwestern part of the state, at the confluence of the White Elster, Pleiße, and Parthe rivers. Leipzig is known for its vibrant cultural scene, historical significance, and as a major economic center in Germany.

Leipzig has a rich history that dates back to at least the 11th century. It was first mentioned in 1015 and became a city in 1165. The city was an important trade center during the Holy Roman Empire and was granted the right to hold markets in 1190. The Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of Nations, took place in 1813 and was a decisive defeat for Napoleon Bonaparte.

During the 19th century, Leipzig became a center for publishing and the book trade. The city played a significant role in the German revolutions of 1848–1849.
