Leslie Buck (September 17, 1922 – April 26, 2010) was a Ukrainian-American businessman, best known as the creator of the iconic Anthora coffee cup.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Buck was born on September 17, 1922, in Kiev, Ukraine. He immigrated to the United States in 1947, settling in Manhattan, New York City. Buck attended night school while working during the day to support himself.
Career[edit | edit source]
Buck began his career in the foodservice industry, working for a paper cup manufacturer. In 1963, he co-founded the Sherri Cup Company, which specialized in manufacturing disposable paper cups for the food and beverage industry.
In 1963, Buck designed the Anthora coffee cup, which became an iconic symbol of New York City. The cup featured a Greek-inspired design with the words "We Are Happy To Serve You" written in Greek-style lettering. The cup quickly gained popularity and became a staple in New York City's coffee shops and delis.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The Anthora coffee cup remains a cultural icon of New York City to this day. It is often featured in movies, television shows, and artwork depicting the city. In 2015, the cup was reissued by the Solo Cup Company to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
