The Lexington Herald-Leader was formed in 1983 with the merger of the Lexington Herald and the Lexington Leader. The Lexington Herald was a morning newspaper founded in 1870, while the Lexington Leader was an afternoon newspaper established in 1892. The merger was facilitated by their common ownership under Knight Ridder, a significant American media company.
