Limosilactobacillus reuteri

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Limosilactobacillus reuteri is a species of lactic acid bacteria that inhabits the gut of humans and other mammals. It is a member of the Lactobacillaceae family and was previously known as Lactobacillus reuteri. This bacterium is named after the German microbiologist Gerhard Reuter, who first isolated it in the 1960s. Limosilactobacillus reuteri is recognized for its health-promoting benefits, including the ability to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, enhance the immune response, and improve digestive health.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Limosilactobacillus reuteri is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium. It is anaerobic, meaning it does not require oxygen for growth, but can tolerate oxygen and grow under microaerophilic conditions. This bacterium produces lactic acid as a major metabolic end product, which contributes to the acidic environment in the gut that inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Health Benefits[edit | edit source]

Limosilactobacillus reuteri has been studied for its potential health benefits. These include:

  • Probiotic Properties: It is widely used as a probiotic, with evidence supporting its benefits for gut health. It can help restore the natural balance of bacteria in the gut microbiota, which can be disrupted by antibiotic use or gastrointestinal infections.
  • Immune System Support: Research suggests that Limosilactobacillus reuteri can modulate the immune system, enhancing the body's defense against infections.
  • Prevention and Treatment of Diarrhea: It has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating diarrhea in both children and adults, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea.
  • Oral Health: Studies indicate that Limosilactobacillus reuteri can improve oral health by reducing the presence of harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Strains[edit | edit source]

There are several strains of Limosilactobacillus reuteri that have been identified, each with specific health benefits. Some of the most well-studied strains include Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 and Limosilactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Limosilactobacillus reuteri is used in a variety of dietary supplements and food products aimed at improving health. These include probiotic supplements, infant formulas, and fermented foods. The selection of specific strains for these products is based on their documented health benefits.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Limosilactobacillus reuteri is generally considered safe for consumption. It has been granted Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food and dietary supplements.

Research[edit | edit source]

Ongoing research is exploring the potential of Limosilactobacillus reuteri in treating and preventing a wider range of health conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
