The Linnean Medal was established in 1888 to commemorate the centenary of the death of Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist who laid the foundations for the modern scheme of binomial nomenclature. The medal is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of natural history, particularly in the areas of botany and zoology.
