Lionel Barrymore (April 28, 1878 – November 15, 1954) was an American actor of stage, screen, and radio. He was a member of the Barrymore family of actors, which included his siblings John Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Barrymore is best known for his roles in films such as It's a Wonderful Life and A Free Soul, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Lionel Barrymore was born Lionel Herbert Blythe in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to actors Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew. He was the eldest of three siblings, all of whom became prominent actors. Barrymore attended various schools, including the Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia, but he was more interested in pursuing a career in acting.

Stage Career[edit | edit source]

Barrymore began his acting career on the stage, making his debut in 1893. He performed in numerous plays, often alongside his family members. His stage career spanned several decades, and he appeared in productions such as Peter Ibbetson and The Copperhead.

Film Career[edit | edit source]

Barrymore transitioned to film in the early 20th century. He appeared in silent films before making a successful transition to talkies. Some of his notable films include Grand Hotel, Dinner at Eight, and Key Largo. His portrayal of the ruthless banker Mr. Potter in It's a Wonderful Life remains one of his most memorable roles.

In addition to his work in film and theater, Barrymore had a successful career in radio. He starred in the popular radio series Mayor of the Town and made numerous guest appearances on other programs.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Barrymore was married twice, first to actress Doris Rankin and later to Irene Fenwick. He had two daughters with Rankin, but both died in infancy. Barrymore was known for his love of painting and composing music. He suffered from severe arthritis, which eventually confined him to a wheelchair, but he continued to act despite his physical limitations.

Death[edit | edit source]

Lionel Barrymore died on November 15, 1954, in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 76. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Barrymore's contributions to the entertainment industry have left a lasting legacy. He is remembered as one of the great character actors of his time and a key figure in the Barrymore family's acting dynasty.
