List of counties in Ohio
List of counties in Ohio details the divisions of Ohio, a state located in the Midwestern United States. Ohio is divided into 88 counties. Counties serve as the primary administrative divisions of the state government, playing a crucial role in local administration, including law enforcement, judicial administration, and public infrastructure.
History[edit | edit source]
The creation of counties in Ohio began after the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which established the Northwest Territory that included the future state of Ohio. The first counties were established to provide governmental structure and facilitate local governance as the population grew. Over time, as settlements expanded and the population increased, additional counties were formed from the original ones to better serve the residents' needs.
