The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest judicial body in the United States. It consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and a number of Associate Justices. The number of justices is determined by the Congress and has varied throughout history, but since 1869, the Court has been composed of nine justices.

Historical overview[edit | edit source]

The Supreme Court was established by Article III of the Constitution in 1789. The first session was held on February 2, 1790. The Court initially had six justices, a number that changed several times before settling at nine in 1869.

Appointment process[edit | edit source]

Justices are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. They hold their offices during good behavior, typically serving for life unless they resign, retire, or are removed after impeachment.
