The List of shipwrecks encompasses a chronological listing of notable shipwrecks around the world. Shipwrecks occur due to navigational errors, poor weather conditions, warfare, piracy, and other accidents at sea. Each entry in the list includes the name of the vessel, the date it was wrecked, and a brief description of the event.

Medieval Shipwrecks[edit | edit source]

  • Mary Rose (1545) - A Tudor ship of the English navy, the Mary Rose sank during a battle with the French fleet near the Solent, off the south coast of England.

17th Century[edit | edit source]

  • Vasa (1628) - This Swedish warship sank on its maiden voyage in the Stockholm harbor due to design flaws that affected its stability.

18th Century[edit | edit source]

  • HMS Royal George (1782) - Sank at Spithead due to flooding while undergoing maintenance, resulting in one of the worst maritime disasters of the 18th century.

  • SS Arctic disaster (1854) - A collision with the French steamer Vesta led to the sinking of this steamship, with a great loss of life.

20th Century[edit | edit source]

  • RMS Titanic (1912) - Perhaps the most famous shipwreck of all time, the Titanic struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, leading to the deaths of over 1,500 people.
  • Lusitania (1915) - This British ocean liner was sunk by a German U-boat during World War I, contributing to the United States' decision to enter the war.

  • MV Sewol (2014) - A South Korean ferry that capsized while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students, leading to a significant loss of life and national mourning.
