Lluís Maria Xirinacs i Damians (6 August 1932 – 11 August 2007) was a Catalan philosopher, politician, and activist known for his involvement in the Catalan independence movement. He was a prominent figure in the struggle for Catalan rights and independence from Spain.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Lluís Maria Xirinacs was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, on 6 August 1932. He studied at the Seminary of Barcelona and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. However, he later left the priesthood to fully dedicate himself to political activism and the fight for Catalan independence.
Political Activism[edit | edit source]
Xirinacs was a staunch advocate for the rights of the Catalan people. He became widely known for his non-violent protests and hunger strikes. In the 1970s, he gained significant attention for his protests against the Francoist dictatorship in Spain. He was imprisoned several times for his activism.
In 1977, Xirinacs was elected as a Senator in the first democratic elections after the end of the Francoist regime. He used his position to advocate for Catalan autonomy and the release of political prisoners.
