Lodge (company)
Lodge Manufacturing Company is an American manufacturer of cast iron cookware, based in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Founded in 1896 by Joseph Lodge, Lodge Manufacturing is one of America's oldest cookware companies in continuous operation. It is still owned and managed by the descendants of the Lodge family. Most of the company's products are manufactured at its foundry in South Pittsburg, which has been in operation since the company was founded.
History[edit | edit source]
Joseph Lodge established the company in 1896 in South Pittsburg, a small city in Tennessee. The company has been family owned and operated since its inception. Lodge Manufacturing has been led by four generations of the Lodge family.
The company's original product line consisted of a range of cast iron goods, including pots and kettles. In the early 20th century, Lodge expanded its product line to include skillets, griddles, and dutch ovens.
In 1950, the company introduced a line of enameled cast iron cookware. This line, known as "Lodge Color," was a departure from the traditional black cast iron pots and pans that the company was known for.
In 2002, Lodge Manufacturing updated its foundry, making it one of the most modern in the world. This allowed the company to produce cast iron cookware with a much smoother surface than was previously possible.
Products[edit | edit source]
Lodge Manufacturing's product line includes a wide range of cast iron cookware, including skillets, griddles, dutch ovens, and camping equipment. The company also produces a line of enameled cast iron cookware, as well as a range of kitchen accessories, such as pot holders and aprons.
The company's products are known for their durability and heat retention properties. Lodge's cast iron cookware is pre-seasoned, meaning it has been treated with oil and baked to create a non-stick surface.
Recognition[edit | edit source]
Lodge Manufacturing has received numerous awards for its products and business practices. In 2003, the company was awarded the "E Award" by the U.S. Department of Commerce for its success in exporting its products.
