Loft refers to a large, adaptable open space, often converted for residential use (a converted loft) from a type of light industrial building. Originally popular among artists, they have become highly sought-after by other bohemians and hipsters, and the demand for lofts has led to the construction of new loft-style buildings in urban areas.

The origin of the loft living concept can be traced back to the SoHo district of New York City in the 1960s. It began when artists sought large, inexpensive spaces in which to live and work, taking advantage of the abandoned factories and warehouses in the area. Lofts are characterized by several key features that distinguish them from traditional apartment living. These include:

- Open Floor Plans: Unlike traditional apartments, lofts typically have few interior walls. This open concept allows for versatile use of the space, accommodating both living and working areas. - High Ceilings: The ceilings in lofts are usually higher than those found in standard apartments, contributing to a sense of spaciousness. - Large Windows: Lofts often feature large, sometimes floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for an abundance of natural light. - Industrial Features: Many lofts retain industrial elements from their previous uses, such as exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and visible pipes and ductwork.

There are generally two types of lofts: hard lofts and soft lofts.

- Hard Lofts: Also known as "true lofts," these are spaces that have been converted from industrial buildings. They retain much of the original architectural features, including the industrial elements mentioned above. - Soft Lofts: These are newly constructed buildings designed to mimic the style of hard lofts. While they offer similar aesthetic features, they lack the historical and industrial authenticity of hard lofts.

The conversion of industrial buildings into residential lofts has sometimes led to legal and zoning challenges. Many cities have specific zoning laws that regulate the use of buildings, and converting a space from industrial to residential use often requires navigating these regulations. Additionally, the process of bringing an old building up to current building codes can be complex and costly.

The popularity of loft living has had a significant cultural impact, particularly in urban areas. It has contributed to the gentrification of many neighborhoods, as the demand for lofts has increased property values and attracted a wealthier demographic. This, in turn, has sometimes led to the displacement of the very artists and bohemians who originally popularized loft living.
