Lorde (born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor on November 7, 1996) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter known for her unconventional musical style and introspective songwriting. Lorde was born in Takapuna, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, and was raised in the nearby suburb of Devonport. Her mother, Sonja Yelich, is a poet, and her father, Vic O'Connor, is a civil engineer. Lorde was signed to Universal Music Group in 2009 after a talent scout discovered her at a school talent show. She began working with producer Joel Little, and together they created her debut extended play, The Love Club EP, which was released in 2012.

Lorde's debut studio album, Pure Heroine, was released in 2013. The album received critical acclaim for its minimalist production and Lorde's mature songwriting.
