Luca Parmitano

Luca Parmitano (born 27 September 1976) is an Italian astronaut in the European Space Agency (ESA). He was selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009. Parmitano is also a Colonel in the Italian Air Force. He has participated in two long-duration missions to the International Space Station (ISS).

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Luca Parmitano was born in Paternò, Sicily, Italy. He graduated from the Italian Air Force Academy in 1999 and completed his basic training in the United States. He has a degree in Political Science from the University of Naples Federico II.

Career[edit | edit source]

Parmitano was selected as an astronaut by the European Space Agency in 2009. He completed his astronaut basic training in November 2010. In 2013, he was assigned to a long-duration mission on the International Space Station for the Expedition 36/Expedition 37.

In 2019, Parmitano became the first Italian astronaut to command the International Space Station during Expedition 61. He has conducted four spacewalks during his career.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Parmitano is married and has two daughters. He enjoys scuba diving, snowboarding, skydiving, and piloting aircraft.
