Lue Gim Gong (1860-1925) was a Chinese-American horticulturist and inventor known for his contributions to the citrus industry in Florida, United States. He played a significant role in developing new varieties of citrus fruits that were better suited for the subtropical climate of Florida.

Early Life and Immigration[edit | edit source]

Lue Gim Gong was born in 1860 in Taishan, Guangdong province, China. At the age of 16, he immigrated to the United States in search of better opportunities. He settled in California, where he initially worked as a laborer on a fruit farm.

Career[edit | edit source]

In the late 19th century, Lue Gim Gong moved to Florida and began working in the citrus industry. He quickly gained recognition for his expertise in grafting and hybridization techniques. His innovative methods allowed him to create new citrus varieties that were more resistant to diseases and pests, as well as better adapted to the Florida climate.

One of Lue Gim Gong's most notable achievements was the development of the "Lue Gim Gong" orange, also known as the "Lue Gim Gong Tangor." This hybrid fruit was a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, combining the sweetness of the tangerine with the larger size and juiciness of the grapefruit. The Lue Gim Gong orange became highly popular and played a significant role in the growth of the Florida citrus industry.

Lue Gim Gong's contributions to the citrus industry in Florida were widely recognized during his lifetime. He received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the prestigious "Citrus Hall of Fame" induction in 1985.
