Lyddington Bede House
Lyddington Bede House is a historic building located in the village of Lyddington, in the county of Rutland, England. The house is a Grade I listed building and is managed by English Heritage. It is renowned for its well-preserved architecture and historical significance.

The origins of Lyddington Bede House date back to the 12th century when it was originally constructed as a palace for the Bishops of Lincoln. The building served as a residence for the bishops until the Reformation in the 16th century. Following the Reformation, the property was converted into an almshouse, known as a "bede house," to provide accommodation for the poor and elderly.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
Lyddington Bede House is an excellent example of medieval architecture. The building features a combination of Norman and Gothic styles. Notable architectural elements include the large hall, the chapel, and the various domestic quarters. The house also retains many original features such as stone fireplaces, wooden beams, and leaded windows.
Interior[edit | edit source]
The interior of Lyddington Bede House is divided into several rooms, each with its own unique historical features. The Great Hall is one of the most impressive rooms, with its high ceiling and large windows. The chapel, which was used for religious services, contains original wooden pews and a stone altar. Other rooms include the kitchen, the dining room, and the bedrooms, which were used by the residents of the almshouse.

Today, Lyddington Bede House is open to the public as a museum. Visitors can explore the various rooms and learn about the history of the building and its former residents. The house also hosts various events and educational programs throughout the year.
