MCT oil
MCT oil is an edible oil from coconuts that are high in the Medium Chain Triglycerides or fatty acids.
Keto friendliness of MCT oil
MCT oil has zero net carbs and is considered very keto diet friendly.
MCT / Coconut oil types
There are 3 main types of coconut oil:
- Virgin or Unrefined – extracted from the fruit of fresh mature coconuts without using high temperatures or chemicals.
- Refined – made from dried coconut meat that’s often chemically bleached and deodorized.
- Partially Hydrogenated – further processed and transforms some of the unsaturated fats (the good fats) into trans fats (the bad fat).
Which coconut / MCT oil is better?
The less refined the coconut oil is, the better it is for the medium chains in fatty acids. Although MCT oil is a type of saturated fat, which previously was considered not healthy, there are now numerous claims liking coconut oil to medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) also known as medium-chain fatty acids. MCTs are a type of saturated fat that has been linked to potential health benefits such as weight loss, appetite control, increased metabolism, anti-inflammatory effects
Weight loss benefits of MCT oil
In a study, consumption of MCT oil[1] as part of a weight loss plan improves weight loss compared with olive oil and can thus be successfully included in a weight loss diet. Small changes in the quality of fat intake[2] can therefore be useful to enhance weight loss. Medium chain fatty acids were also proven to help improve[3] cholesterol in animal models.
