Macleod
Macleod is a surname of Scottish origin. It is derived from the Gaelic MacLeòid, meaning "son of Leòd". The name Leòd is an old Norse personal name. The surname Macleod is common in the Hebrides and Isle of Skye, and there are two main branches of the clan: the Macleods of Harris and Dunvegan, and the Macleods of Lewis.
Origins[edit | edit source]
The progenitor of the Clan Macleod is believed to be Leòd, who lived in the 13th century. The two main branches of the Clan, the Macleods of Harris and Dunvegan, and the Macleods of Lewis, claim descent from Leòd. The Macleods of Lewis claim that their progenitor, Tormod, was a younger son of Leòd, while the Macleods of Harris and Dunvegan claim their progenitor, Torquil, was a younger son of Leòd.
