Magic Mouthwash
Magic mouthwash is a pharmacy-compounded medication used to alleviate oral and esophageal pain. It is also known as Mary's Magic Potion, Duke's Mouthwash, or Miracle Mouthwash. The term "magic mouthwash" is used to describe a variety of rinses that are used to treat different mouth sores and conditions.
Composition[edit | edit source]
The composition of magic mouthwash varies, but most types contain at least three of these basic ingredients:
- An antibiotic to kill bacteria around the sore
- A local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort
- An antihistamine or local anesthetic to reduce swelling and discomfort
- A corticosteroid to reduce inflammation
- An antifungal to reduce fungal growth

Magic mouthwash is used to treat various conditions such as:
- Oral mucositis due to radiation therapy or chemotherapy
- Aphthous ulcers or canker sores
- Other oral conditions such as lichen planus and oral thrush
Preparation and Administration[edit | edit source]
Magic mouthwash is typically compounded in a pharmacy. The patient swishes the mouthwash in their mouth and then spits it out. Some formulations are meant to be swallowed, particularly if the patient has pain further down the esophagus.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Possible side effects of magic mouthwash may include problems with taste, a burning or tingling sensation in the mouth, drowsiness, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea.
