Maidenhair tree

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba), also known as the ginkgo tree or the ginkgo, is a species of tree native to China. It is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, all others being extinct. It is found in fossils dating back 270 million years.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Maidenhair tree is a large tree, typically reaching heights of 20–35 m (66–115 ft). Some specimens in China are over 50 m (164 ft). The tree has an angular crown and long, somewhat erratic branches, and is usually deep rooted and resistant to wind and snow damage. Young trees are often tall and slender, and sparsely branched; the crown becomes broader as the tree ages.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The Maidenhair tree has various uses in traditional medicine and as a source of food.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

The Maidenhair tree is a popular ornamental tree, due to its ability to resist disease and insect infestations, and its ability to form aerial roots and sprouts.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Although the Maidenhair tree is widely cultivated and introduced early in human history, it is currently listed as a globally threatened species.
