Major Duodenal Papilla[edit | edit source]

The Major Duodenal Papilla is a crucial anatomical structure located in the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine. It plays a significant role in the digestive system, serving as the primary exit point for the pancreatic duct and bile duct.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Major Duodenal Papilla is situated in the second part of the duodenum, approximately 7-10 cm distal to the pylorus. It is surrounded by a circular muscle known as the Sphincter of Oddi, which controls the flow of bile and pancreatic juice into the duodenum.

Function[edit | edit source]

The Major Duodenal Papilla's primary function is to facilitate the delivery of bile and pancreatic juice into the duodenum. The bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, aids in the digestion and absorption of fats. The pancreatic juice, on the other hand, contains digestive enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids in the food.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormalities or blockages in the Major Duodenal Papilla can lead to serious health conditions. For instance, gallstones can block the bile duct, causing jaundice or pancreatitis. In some cases, the Major Duodenal Papilla may need to be examined or treated using a procedure called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
