A mamelon (from French "mamelon," meaning "nipple") refers to one of three rounded protuberances found on the cutting edge of an incisor tooth when it first erupts through the gum. These small, nipple-like structures are a natural feature of newly erupted incisor teeth and are most commonly seen in permanent incisors.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Mamelons typically appear as three distinct, rounded elevations on the edge of an incisor tooth. They give the tooth a somewhat serrated or scalloped appearance. Mamelons are more noticeable in younger individuals, especially when the incisors first erupt. Over time, natural wear from biting and eating foods can smooth out the appearance of mamelons.

Dental Care[edit | edit source]

In some cases, mamelons may remain prominent and require dental attention for aesthetic reasons. Dentists can smooth the surface of the incisors to reduce the appearance of mamelons, creating a more uniform and less serrated appearance if desired.

It's important to note that mamelons are a natural part of tooth development and are not considered a dental problem or abnormality.
