Manhattan Plaza
Manhattan Plaza is a large, federally-subsidized residential complex located in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The complex, completed in 1977, has been a significant factor in the revitalization and gentrification of its neighborhood and has been home to many notable residents, particularly performing artists.
History[edit | edit source]
Manhattan Plaza was originally conceived as a luxury development for professionals working in the nearby Theater District. However, due to the economic downturn in the 1970s, the original developers were unable to find tenants. The project was taken over by the federal government and repurposed as subsidized housing, with a preference for people working in the performing arts.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The complex consists of two 46-story towers and several low-rise buildings, with a total of 1,689 apartments. The towers, designed by architect David Todd, are notable for their distinctive rounded corners and large windows, which offer panoramic views of the city.
Community[edit | edit source]
Manhattan Plaza has been home to many notable residents, including actors Samuel L. Jackson, Larry David, and Tennessee Williams, as well as musicians Yo-Yo Ma and Jerome Robbins. The complex has a strong sense of community, with many residents involved in the performing arts.
Facilities[edit | edit source]
Manhattan Plaza offers a range of facilities for its residents, including a health club, swimming pool, tennis courts, and a theater. The complex also has a number of commercial tenants, including a supermarket and several restaurants.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Manhattan Plaza has been credited with revitalizing the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood and has been a model for other subsidized housing developments. The complex has also been recognized for its role in supporting the performing arts in New York City.
