Marcos

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Marcos is a term that refers to a political dynasty in the Philippines, most notably associated with Ferdinand Marcos, who served as the President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. The Marcos family has been a significant force in Philippine politics for several decades, with several members holding high-ranking positions in the government.

History[edit | edit source]

The Marcos family's political dynasty began with Ferdinand Marcos, who was elected as the President of the Philippines in 1965. He ruled the country for 21 years, during which he declared martial law and ruled by decree. His rule was marked by human rights abuses, political repression, and corruption.

Ferdinand Marcos was married to Imelda Marcos, who also played a significant role in Philippine politics. She served as the First Lady of the Philippines during her husband's presidency and was known for her extravagant lifestyle. After Ferdinand's death, Imelda returned to politics and served as a member of the Philippine House of Representatives.

The couple's children, Bongbong Marcos and Imee Marcos, have also been involved in politics. Bongbong has served as a senator and vice governor, while Imee has been a governor and a representative.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

The Marcos family has been involved in numerous controversies over the years. Ferdinand Marcos's presidency was marked by allegations of human rights abuses, corruption, and the accumulation of ill-gotten wealth. After his death, the Philippine government sought to recover this wealth.

Imelda Marcos has also faced charges of corruption. In 2018, she was convicted on seven counts of graft during the 21 years her husband was president.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite the controversies, the Marcos family continues to be a significant force in Philippine politics. They have a strong support base, particularly in their home province of Ilocos Norte. However, their legacy remains a subject of debate in the Philippines.
