Marechal Foch is a red grape variety that originated in France. It is a hybrid grape, resulting from a cross between Vitis vinifera and Vitis riparia. The grape is named after the French marshal Ferdinand Foch, who played a significant role in World War I.
History[edit | edit source]
Marechal Foch was developed in the early 20th century by French grape breeder Eugene Kuhlmann. The grape was created by crossing the traditional French grape variety Goldriesling with a North American grape variety called Vitis riparia. The resulting hybrid grape was named after Ferdinand Foch, in honor of his contributions during World War I.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Marechal Foch grapes are known for their deep red color and high acidity. The grape produces wines with intense flavors and aromas, often described as earthy, with notes of blackberry, cherry, and spice. The wines made from Marechal Foch grapes are typically medium-bodied, with moderate tannins and a good balance of fruitiness and acidity.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Marechal Foch is primarily grown in North America, particularly in the United States and Canada. It is also cultivated in some parts of Europe, including France and Germany. The grape is well-suited to cooler climates and can withstand harsh winters, making it a popular choice for winemakers in regions with challenging growing conditions.
Wine production[edit | edit source]
Marechal Foch is primarily used for red wine production. The grape's high acidity and intense flavors make it suitable for both varietal wines and blending. It is often used in blends with other red grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to add complexity and depth to the final wine.
Notable wines[edit | edit source]
Some notable wines made from Marechal Foch grapes include:
- Domaine du Ridge Marechal Foch Reserve - A Canadian red wine from Quebec, known for its rich flavors and smooth tannins.
- Chateau Foch - A red wine from the United States, with a balanced profile of fruitiness and acidity.
